The Alva Care After-School Program Parent Handbook 2016-2017
The After School Program is a fee-based program for students in kindergarten through 8th grade who are enrolled at The Alva School. Students must be able to function in a group with a supervision ratio of 15:1 and be self-sufficient in bathroom procedures. Registration is required yearly and is offered on a first-come, first-serve basis. Registration may be suspended if enrollment reaches program capacity.
A.M. Program: 6:30—7:25 $2.00 per child per day/$10.00 per week
P.M. Program: 2:10—6:00 $8.00 per child per day/$40.00 per week
$7.00 sibling rate
There is a one-time $20 registration fee per child. This fee is due before your child‘s first day.
The Alva Care After School Program is only in session on school days. There is no program when children are out of school for Teacher Duty Days, In-service Days, and all District Observed Holidays including Winter Break and Spring Break.
Our program operates on a pre-pay basis. Checks should be made payable to The Alva School and should include the student’s name on the memo line. It is very important to maintain a zero balance every week. Please be aware, if your account becomes past due, you will be called to pick up your child. Unpaid balances are subject to collection.
The Florida Constitution Article VII prohibits the School District from extending credit to any individual or corporation. Therefore, after an attempt is made to collect any outstanding fees, dismissal from the program will occur for non-payment and the account will be turned over for collections.
Any check returned for insufficient funds will be charged a $20.00 service charge. After a returned check, parents will be requested to pay in cash or money order
Late Pick up Fee:
A late fee will be charged for pick up after 6:00 p.m. The fee is $1.00 per minute after 6:00 p.m., according to the school office clock. Late fees are due no later than the following day. Nonpayment of late fees or tardiness in excess of three times will result in your child’s dismissal from the program.
It is necessary that your child’s teacher be notified, in writing, when your child is to attend the program if he/she does not attend on a daily basis
Drop off/Pick up:
Morning care students are dropped off in the front office. Please walk in and sign in your student. For afternoon pick up, it is necessary for parents to sign out the children in the front office as well. Please be prepared to show your identification to the receptionist. Please do not be offended by this request—it is for the safety of your child.
Students who need to take medication will need a parent permission form and a physician’s permission form on file in the school clinic. The Alva Care After-School staff must be notified in writing.
Please have your child bring his/her own favorite snack from home.
Students will be scheduled for a 30 minute block of time to complete homework Monday through Thursday. Additionally, students will have free play, computer time, arts and crafts and physical education activities. Once a student finishes homework, they will be expected to read AR books or work quietly until homework time is done. Please be advised that homework time is not a time to tutor, but that our teachers assist with questions during this time.
The counselors of each grade level group will set rules and expectations for student behavior but these rules will include:
- Treat other children and adults with respect
- Obey all playground and school rules
- Follow directions when given the first time
- Always do your best
- Be honest and trustworthy
Students who choose not to follow the rules will have the following consequences:
- Verbal warning from counselor
- Time out from activity (length of time appropriate to age)
- Time out in the office or with the Director (parents notified at pick-up)
- Program referral (After 3 referrals student will be suspended from the program for 2 weeks)
*School administration has final authority to remove a child from the program.
In the event of a severe infraction, parents may be notified by phone and asked to pick up child from school immediately.
Students who are frequently aggressive or hurtful toward other students will be dismissed from the program.
The purpose of the Alva Care After-School Program is to provide quality childcare for students before and after school in a safe setting. A variety of activities will be planned daily to ensure a fun and caring, yet structured, environment for children.
